MSC Fisheries and Chain of Custody Certification

Poole Harbour Clam and Cockle – Certified by MEC

The Poole Harbour Clam and Cockle Fishery has been assessed and certified against the MSC Fisheries Standard for sustainable fishing and has been found to meet the criteria for a well-managed and sustainable fishery. As the Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) and certifier of this fishery, ME Certification Limited would like to congratulate them.

The fishery takes place within the confines of Poole Harbour, Dorset by vessels registered as permit holders under the Southern IFCA Poole Harbour Dredge Permit byelaw. The permit holders target Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) and cockle (Cerastoderma edule) by pump scoop dredge and is managed at two levels: EU and national levels.

The main strength of the client fishery is that it is a well-organised fleet which operates in a well-defined management framework, with transparent stakeholder consultation processes and clear mechanisms for dispute resolution. The stocks of Manila clam and cockle appear to be robust to over exploitation with regard to spatial and temporal limits on fishing activity. A significant proportion of the fishable area is closed to fishing, to protect VMEs and ETP interactions or for other reasons. Management of the fishery includes consideration for habitat interaction, ETP interaction and ecosystem function and is a collaborative effort between fishers, management authorities and government agencies.
